Creekside Gourmet Explains What Makes a Truly Great Gift Basket

Creekside Gourmet Foods, a Tonawanda specialty store, sells gift baskets, Buffalo novelty items, gourmet foods, and candy making supplies. Although their new Tonawanda location has only been open since this past October, already, it’s been creating a buzz among people looking for unique gift items and great, hard to find foods — as an example, one of their popular (but odd) favorites include a so-called "rectum wrecker" hot sauce!

Today, we had the chance to talk with Carrie Horhota, co-owner of Creekside Gourmet, about the gift baskets they sell there for an average of about $30 per basket. Creekside is currently gearing up for the upcoming Easter season, and there's no end to the litany of detailed and sometimes strange requests.

Ms. Horhota, why is a gift basket a good idea for birthdays, events, and more?
Everyone likes to eat.  Our motto is: "Flowers may be easy, but gift baskets have taste!"

Very true — it’s hard to deny the appeal of a gourmet treat. What is it that people look for in a great gift basket?
They look for options for contents of the basket. What's the bang for their buck.  I like to find out if the recipient has any likes/dislikes, do they have any hobbies, are there any items they cannot eat. Also, I have the capabilities to custom label items with a message.

It’s great that you have the ability to customize gift baskets so that they’re tailored to the individual’s interests. What’s something people should avoid in gift baskets?
Frills and fillers.  I like to stay away from all of those greenery and fake flowers, People want it filled with goodies.

Fake flowers don’t seem too appetizing. What’s the funniest thing a customer ever asked for?

I don't know if this haha funny, but when the "Seinfeld" television series was ending, a customer was having a series ending party.  If you're at all familiar with Seinfeld, they used a lot of brand name products in the episodes, such as pez, yoohoo chocolate drink, Drake's cakes, etc...  They wanted a basket to raffle off for their guests with items from the episodes. It was a challenge, but deliver I did!  They were very impressed.
